The most obvious answer is: voice over schools and classes. When directors and producers are looking for new voices, these are ready-made pools of talent for them to tap into. If you’re just starting out, these tips will help take you to the next level.

Train with Professionals and Ask Questions!
Many classes, such as PatFraleyTeaches.com, bring in guest professional directors, producers, and actors. When taking a class with such professional, the most important thing you can do is ASK QUESTIONS. Take advantage of those professionals who are already in the industry.

Talk to Voice Actors One on One
A professional actor may be reluctant to offer up his/her agent’s private cabana number, so instead, ask them how they got started, how they practice, what are some of the most important lessons they’ve learned from being in the booth, etc.

Speak with Directors and Producers
Ask a director/producer what they look for in an actor, what makes an actor easy to work worth, and why certain actors jump to the top of their list for specific projects.

Ask Your Friends
Ask your friends if they know any professionals in the voice over industry. Get connected with these people, and have conversations with them. Learn from them. If you have the additional advantage of living in a larger city, those professionals may be more prevalent than you realize.

Hire a Private Voice Over Coach
This person would certainly have connections. Not only will they help you get connected in the industry but when the time comes, private coaches can be paramount if you are going in for a specific role, honing an accent, or adding character types to your repertoire.

Most importantly, once you book your first gig, come prepared, be flexible, be personable, be ready to work, and you’ll be well on your way to booking more projects!
